Using ACT! 2007 with MS Word

Tuesday, March 27th, 2007

ACT! 2007 currently doesn’t support Microsoft Office 2007. ACT! will not recognize Word 2007. This means if you are using ACT! 2007 and want to upgrade to the latest version of Office and you want to use Word as your word processor in ACT!, you will need to leave an older version of Word installed on your machine. In my case, I have Office 2007 installed (including Word 2007) and Word 2003 on my machine. Of course, make sure you have the proper licensing for both versions of Word.

So far, this seems to be working fine for me. I will post back if I run into any further issues. Hopefully, ACT! will release a patch to make it compatible with Office 2007 soon. I have my doubts though; it’s not like there wasn’t some advance notice that Office 2007 was coming.

If you don’t want to use MS Word, you can always use the built in ACT! word processor.

Are Your Ads Keeping People Away?

Monday, March 26th, 2007

Via Jakob Nielsen’s Alert Box, here is a link to a study about the intrusiveness of on-line ads and how the effect on return visits to your site. It’s an academic type of paper, so a little dry to read, but still interesting and gives you some things to consider before loading up your site with ads.

Get Help Implementing Duct Tape Marketing Products

Monday, March 26th, 2007

If you don’t want to read a commercial, RUN out of the room RIGHT NOW.

Announcing the first product from Rebar – the Un-Stuck support plan for Duct Tape Marketing products. There are several products in the Duct Tape Marketing family that I describe as "seminars in a box". These products are designed for small business owners who feel they are not ready for a coaching relationship, but still want to work on their marketing. The seminar-in-a-box format has many advantages over the traditional seminar, but since every business is unique, questions still come up when you begin implementing the material to your unique situation. That’s where the Un-Stuck support plan comes in. The plan provides 45 days of unlimited e-mail and phone support, so you can get the help you need, when you need it, to successfully implement your Duct Tape Marketing product in your business.

Click here to learn more about the Duct Tape Marketing Products and the Un-Stuck support plan.

OK, it’s safe to come back into the room now.

Highrise Sees First Sunrise

Thursday, March 22nd, 2007

37 Signals announced the launch of their long awaited Highrise (formerly Sunrise) contact manager yesterday. Highrise sports a nice clean interface and has some cool features, like being able to send updates to it via e-mail. Highrise is not intended to be a CRM system, but that doesn’t stop people from making CRM type feature requests on their forum.

I don’t think I will be using Highrise, mostly because I want the ability to define and assign activity series to my contacts. Sign up for a free Highrise account and see if it will meet your needs.

Referrals as a Leading Indicator

Tuesday, March 20th, 2007

Usually when I post about referrals, it is in the context of marketing strategy. While having a referral system is a great marketing strategy, customer referrals are also a good leading indicator that you are delighting customers.

Leading indicators are important because they provide early warning signs that can be used to take corrective action. Compare these with lagging indicators, such as profit per employee – once you have the measurement, it is too late to do anything about it. Are the metrics that your company uses leading or lagging?

If you see that your customer referrals are tapering off, make sure you investigate the cause and take corrective action before you start losing customers as well as prospects. If referrals are increasing, investigate that as well and do more of what’s working.
